Don Bradman’s baggy green to be auctioned off for $150, 000
THE 1934 BAGGY GREEN hat of Don Bradman, legendary Australian cricketer, will be auctioned off on 15 August, with auctioneers estimating that the item will sell for somewhere between $120, 000 to $150, 000.
The green cap was worn by Bradman during the 1934 tour of England, which followed the infamous 1932-1933 Ashes, also known as the ‘Bodyline’ Series, in reference to the cricketing tactic used against Bradman by England to counteract his batting skills.
The cap will be sold with a letter from Don Bradman that notes his time wearing this particular baggy green.
The 1934 baggy green was given to the famous cricketer’s golf coach, Jack Bahen, who often loaned the item to the South Australian Museum.
Mossgreen, the Auctioneer house managing the sale said that other than a few moth holes the hat is in pretty good condition.
This isn’t the first time that one of Bradman’s baggy greens has been up for grabs.
In 2008, the baggy green Bradman wore during the 1948 Invincible Ashes Tour —Bradman’s final cricket tour of England — sold for just over $400, 000, despite auctioneers estimating the cap at around a million dollars.
Bradman is recognised as one of Australia’s greatest cricketers, holding a 99.94 test average.
As a young 21 year-old, Don Bradman scored the highest number of runs by a single batsman in a single day’s play – 309 runs not out, setting a world record.
