“A mineral sands mine near Busselton 195km south of Perth, WA. “The car provides a scale for the image, and then you ask yourself; ‘What is going on? What are they mining? And can it be rehabilitated?'”, says Christian.

Waterfall, Milford Sound, New Zealand, 50km north-west of Queenstown. “I was travelling there with my family on a shooting holiday,” says Christian. “We went out for an overnight cruise on the Sound and the boat would position itself under each of the waterfalls for a close up look. Milford Sound would have to be one of my favourite places in the world. Perfect for landscape photography.”

Lake Lefroy, 64km south of Kalgoorlie, WA. “I was shooting aerial photographs for an exhibition I called ‘Below’,” says Christian. “It was all about industry, be it mining or farming. I hired a Cessna out of Kalgoorlie and flew out over the gold mines that are peppered throughout the lake.”

Industrial parts, Kwinana, WA, 33km south of Perth. “This heavy industrial region is home to some great photographic subjects, especially if you like strange shapes, colours and subjects,” says Christian. “This image reminds me of when I was a boy building Airfix plastic models. The layout is similar. Others said it looks like a circuit board. All I know is that one day it will be a towering industrial structure destined for Western Australia’s mining region.”

Cockburn Range, 72km west of Kununurra in the Kimberley, WA. “I was teaching photography to a group with two other professionals, Peter Eastway and Tony Hewitt,” says Christian. “We found a great vista and made some beautiful images during a fantastic sunrise. The ranges are one of the spectacular features of the Kimberley region.”

The Stirling Range, 75km north of Albany, WA. “I was on a family trip when I took this image,” says Christian. “My brother and I had left our respective families sleeping and headed out hoping to get some good light. This image was one of the last we took that morning before the light turned and the show was over.”

Vegetable Gardens, Kwinana, 33km south of Perth, WA. “I love the scale in this image,” says Christian. “When you see the small figures picking the produce you get a sense of how we grow our food.”

A bauxite mine near Collie, 158km south of Perth, WA. “This is more abstract painting than tailings dam,” says Christian. “The red heart is a central focus to draw the eye and engage the viewer. When flying over these places you really ask yourself; ‘What am I actually photographing here?'”.

Two trees shrouded in fog just outside of Bridgetown, 224km south of Perth, WA. “I knew there was going to be a good chance of fog on this particular morning so I left home 2 hours before sunrise to travel to this location,” says Christian. “I wasn’t disappointed and spent several hours shooting farmland and the town in the mist.”

The Stirling Range, 75km north of Albany, WA. “We had some beautiful conditions that morning,” says Christian. “I love the mist that sits low between the valleys. I think the Stirling Range has some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Australia.”

Golden Valley Tree Park, Balingup, 204km south of Perth, WA.  “I was trying some in-camera effects using slow shutter speeds,” says Christian. “I wanted a different look and found that if I moved the camera in circles during a long exposure I would get circles of light.”

The Super Pit, Kalgoorlie, 549km east of Perth, WA, one of the world’s biggest man-made holes in the ground. “They have been mining for gold here for decades,” says Christian. “The sheer amount of dirt that has been removed is staggering. The mine operates day and night and I was told it even generates its own wind patterns. Amazing to see the scale of it, created by man’s determination to acquire precious metal.”

Lord Howe Island off the east coast of Australia. The vista looking south across the island to Balls Pyramid was spectacular says Christian.

Lake Lefroy, 64km south of Kalgoorlie, WA. “This is one of my favourite images from Lake Lefroy,” says Christian. “The pastel colours and the lines created when exploring the lake bed for gold made this image striking.”

A tailings dam near Kambalda, WA, 56km south of Kalgoorlie. “I really liked the composition and colour of this image, it was more an abstract painting than industrial toxic waste,” says Christian. The image was also part of his ‘Below’ exhibition.

Bauxite tailings dam in Kwinana, 33km south of Perth, WA. “It’s like a tapestry,” says Christian. “It’s one of my all-time favourite images as I only think of its aesthetics, not the reality of what it is. People live nearby but would never know what is there, as it’s hidden from view.” Another image taken for his “Below” exhibition.
