The Reserve Bank of Australia has revealed the design of a new $50 note that will be issued into circulation from October 2018.

THE NEXT GENERATION of the Australian $50 banknote will be issued into circulation in October this year, with new design features and improved security to prevent counterfeiting.

“Improved security and ease of recognition underpin the design of the new $50 banknote,” Governor Philip Lowe said.

“With the release of the $5 and $10 during the past two years, we are confident the Australian public are becoming familiar with the new banknote security features.”

While key aspects of the existing design – colour, size and the people portrayed – have been retained, changes include a top-to-bottom clear window, a new rolling-colour effect and small excerpts from Unaipon’s writing and Cowan’s maiden parliamentary speech.

The RBA plans to update the $20 bank note next year.

The designs are the culmination of a process of extensive consultation with experts and industry. The RBA will be revealing more information about the new design and security features of the new banknote series in the coming months.

The current series of banknotes can still continue to be used after the new banknotes are issued.

Australia’s famously durable and secure polymer bank notes were developed in a combined effort by the RBA and the CSIRO, and first went into circulation in 1988.
