I have been wearing my Arc’teryx Norvan LD 2 trail running shoes for the past three months, putting them through their paces in both dry and wet conditions on sandy coastal trails, roads and bush tracks, with a mix of surfaces including rocky, gravel, muddy, and often slippery timber boardwalks.

Design

The Arc’teryx Norvan LD 2 is an incredibly light shoe – it is the lightest I have ever worn. The pair only weigh 220g, so you hardly feel like you are wearing them at all. I was a bit concerned that they were too light, but that light weight and inherent flexibility combines with a robust structure around the base and sides of your feet, so the support is there.

In addition to being super-light, the material used for the upper section of the shoe really breathes, so my feet didn’t get too hot or sweaty in them. And, considering the amount of breathability, the weave is tight, which ensured no sand got in – a definite bonus!

In the field with the Arc’teryx Norvan LD 2

The lightweight structure of the shoes has not compromised support which surprised me; they are flexible while also offering plenty of support for my flat feet. I have a wide foot but these shoes, although a little narrower than the shoes I would usually wear, have still been comfortable. However, I will say that, if Arc’teryx was able offer a wide and narrow option, that would be great. I would opt for a wider fit if it was available; the sides around the front of my foot were a little restricted over longer runs.

The Vibram Megagrip outsole really lives up to its moniker, offering loads of traction on various surfaces, whether wet or dry/muddy.

The Arc’teryx Norvan LD 2 sole is very grippy and offers loads of traction. I have clambered over wet rocks and run on gravel and rock trails in them and have had no issues with slipping or feeling unstable on those surfaces. The outsole is Vibram Megagrip, which features LITEBASE tech that reduces the weight without sacrificing durability. This ensures that aforementioned reliable grip and flexibility, without losing the support.

The final word

These shoes dry quicky and have great grip … and I have to admit to loving that bright orange colour (it’s also available in a teal colour scheme). I am enjoying taking these shoes out and about particularly when it’s been wet and muddy. At $260 the Arc’teryx Norvan LD 2 is an investment, but I’d say worth it for such a versatile shoe.
