Lake Cootapatamba, visible in the background, is the highest lake in Australia. A post-glacial lake, it was formed after the last ice age. ‘Cootapatamba’ is an adaptation of an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the place where eagles drink’, referring to an old tale about an eagle that was hunted down and killed for swooping away with an infant.
