Pemberton
Pemberton’s towering karri trees are famous for their fire lookouts, which were constructed at the top, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s.
Grass Trees, Bridgetown
These stout grass trees stand solidly sentinel at dusk.
Salt lake
Nick Rains says that if he had to pick a favourite shot it would be this one, which he thinks looks like a stingray.
Walpole Jetty
Obviously the victim of an artist, Walpole Jetty is colourful against still water.
Beedalup Mist
In the early morning, mist rises off Lake Beedelup near Pemberton.
Smooth Rocks, Bremer Bay
The Southern Ocean has worn down these rocks off our southern coast east of Albany and Peter Eastway has captured these smooth mounds peeking through a brief window in the clouds.
Picasso, Stirling Ranges
A pontoon floats amid the mists of a early morning in the south-west.
Junkyard, Katanning
A very human landscape is captured in Katanning, an inland town of only about 4000.
Nebulae, Stirling Ranges
Dunaliella salinais a type micro-algae able to survive in highly saline conditions and produced the pink colour that sometimes colours salt lakes.
Wheat harvesting, Stirling Ranges
Late summer, early autumn. Just north of the Stirling Ranges are mile upon mile of wheat with seemingly tiny harvesters cutting interesting swathes through the fields. In the last sunlight of the day the long shadows pick out the textures and emphasis the golden colours of the ripe crops.
Dam, Stirling Ranges
“My style of aerial photography involves looking for abstract patterns that are not immediately recognisable. This round dam sits next to an orchard of some description, and attracted my attention due to its odd shape,” say Nick Rain.
Wyadup Beach
“Wyadup Beach is similar to the better-known Canal Rocks nearby, both feature orange coloured rocks. In the centre of the formation is a small canyon which, and when the tide is right it is filled by a wave-fueled cascade, seen here to the left of the frame,” says Nick. “The ebb and flow of the waves creating this little river can be quite mesmerising.”
Stirling Ranges, near Bluff Knoll
Bluff Knoll, out of frame to the right of this shot, sits amongst a series of very abrupt rocky escarpments towering over the flat agriculture land to the north and south of the Stirling Ranges. “I made this image during a fierce rain squall and if you look closely you should see the rain drops as little white lines,” says Nick. “To say the weather is changeable around the South West would be an understatement.”
Peninsula Road, Bridgetown
Early morning mist to the west of Bridgetown, along Peninsula Road. “I saw the cows grazing on a distant field and waited for the fog to reveal enough of the surrounding rolling hills to make an interesting image,” Nick explains.
Clearing mist near Bridgetown. “The sun forms a bright crown around a gum tree and the resulting crepuscular rays give the image a feeling of awakening to the dawning of a new day,” says Nick.
Picardy Winery, Pemberton
Ranks of vines marching towards the bare trees. “There is something quite compelling about late season vineyards, with those rich warm oranges and reds hinting at fine red wine enjoyed around a log fire,” Nick says.
Salitage Vineyard near Manjimup
Mid winter, the vines are bare of leaves and create a graphic shape leading towards the avenue of trees on the horizon. Nick says; “I chose to remove the colour and go with an antique sepia look – the vivid green grass was quite distracting and this image is all about shapes and forms.”
Approaching Storm, Albany
“During our shoots we often had huge shifts in the weather within the same day. This makes it hard to plan shoots, but at least there is plenty of variety and it’s just a case of rethinking the day’s shooting based on what the light is doing,” says Nick Rains.
