Australian emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae)

“I looked down from the top of a hill to an immense salt lake in the interior of Australia. The sun had just set and was turning the rarely flooded lake into tones of pinks and purples. With my binoculars I discovered a group of emus in the middle of the lake. I decided to run down the side of the hill towards the shores of the lake. I didn’t know if I could enter it as some salt lakes act like quicksand when they have water. But I was pleased to find out the surface was as hard as a rock with only a centimeter of water. I started to walk very quickly in the Emus direction, expecting them to run at any second. I managed to approach them in a distance of about 30 meters. Luckily there was just enough light to take the photos. An unforgettable moment that thankfully I was able to capture,” says Christian.

Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla)

“After being away from Australia for fourteen years I travelled to the Strzelecki desert where I was lucky enough to register a flock of galahs taking off from a Coolibah tree after they had replenished on the small amount of water available at the base of this lonely tree. It is rare to get such a clear and symmetrical shot of these beautiful birds in flight. The tree has a clear outline of a map of Australia,” says Christian.

The Coorong region is a large inlet where Australia’s biggest river runs into the sea. Home to thousands of migratory birds, the unique coastal environment is made up of over hundred kilometers of beaches, estuaries and massive sand dunes. It is famous for its relentless cold winds and instable weather. This photo, however, was taken on a rare perfectly calm day,” says Christian.

“The ancient red gum forests along the banks of Australia’s Murray River act as a source of food and shelter for many different types of parrots. In the early morning hundreds of corellas silently migrate up and down the river less than a meter from the surface in enormous flocks, creating a spectacular phenomenon,” says Christian.

“On this day in October there were unique atmospheric conditions, additional to the alignment of the sun between two palm trees. This made the photograph impossible to reproduce with such clarity,” says Christian.
