GALLERY: Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition brings together exquisite images of wildlife and natural landscapes. This year there were over 42,000 entries, and two Australians made the final selection. An exhibition of 100 photos will be on display at the Australian Maritime Museum in Sydney from 23 June 2016: find out more.

Known in only two populations located are over 30km apart, the Nangur spiny skink is at risk from habitat destruction and feral animals.

GALLERY: Researchers in the wild

Wild Researchers is a photographic collaboration between award-winning Australian photographer, Tamara Dean and the University of NSW. The evocative images of researchers in the field challenge the stereotype of scientists in lab coats. The exhibition is being held at the Australian Museum until 13 December 2015.

The Kimberley region is home to some of the oldest and most prolific collections of rock art in the world. Scientists are embarking on a detailed study attempting to date the art, and experts hope this will shed light on how long ago Aboriginal people first landed on this country.

GALLERY: Australia’s high country cattlemen

In her latest book, photographer Melanie Faith Dove depicts Australian mountain cattlemen through four seasons of work, from droving their cattle into the high country during summer, to mustering them home in autumn before the snow falls. In capturing the spirit of the mountain cattlemen, Melanie communicates the challenges they face; in May 2015, grazing cattle was banned in alpine national parks in Victoria, but the legend lives on in State Forests.
