PODCAST: Tim Cope on recreating Ghengis Khan’s journey

ON THURSDAY 7 APRIL, as part of our Trailblazers Talks series at the Australian Museum, adventurer Tim Cope gave an in-depth recount of his 10,000km journey on horseback retracing Genghis Khan’s infamous march.
In 2004, Tim began a three-year trip across the length of the Eurasian Steppe, riding from Karakorum in Mongolia, through Kazakhstan, Russia, Crimea and the Ukraine to Hungary. His only companion was Tigon, a young dog given to him by a Kazakh nomad worried about Tim’s safety.
Across the Eurasian Steppe, Tim and Tigon encountered wolves, horse thieves, and extreme temperatures as Tim grieved the tragic loss of his father.
For his inspirational adventure, Tim earned both Young Adventurer of the Year and Adventurer of the Year awards from the Australian Geographic Society, and Adventurer of the Year from National Geographic.
Trailblazers Talks is a 21-week series featuring talks from Australian explorers, presented by Australian Geographic. The talks are held on Thursday evenings at the Australian Museum until 14 July 2016.
Upcoming speakers include marine conservationist and filmmaker Valerie Taylor, diving legend Ron Allum, and Gabi Kennard, the first Australian woman to circumnavigate the globe by plane.
