New walking tracks in Queensland will rival the Kokoda Trail says the Premier.

A NEW COLLECTION OF walking tracks in North Queensland could rank with some of the most notable in the world, if the state has anything to say about it.

As announced by Premier Anna Bligh this month, the ‘Dreaming Track’ from the north of Cairns to Cape York will stretch more than 2,000 km and weave through rainforest, coastal cliffs, mountain ranges and river fringes.”Together, this network of walking experiences will rival the world’s greatest and most popular walks including Kokoda and Milford Sound,” Bligh says.

World class icon

The project has been in the planning stages for the last 12 months as the Premier and Kate Jones, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability , negotiated technical, feasibility, legislative approval and infrastructure plans.

The track is expected to boost tourism and economic opportunities in the area and create jobs for Indigenous people. Construction is set to begin in the next year after the trails are refined and management arrangements are made. Bligh is partnering with Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation and traditional owners to see the project through.

Upon completion of the Dreaming Track, Cape York could become a “world class iconic destination for bushwalkers,” says Bligh who made the walking track one of her campaign promises in 2009.
