These photographs will make you see squids in a whole new light

Award-winning Australian photographer Matty Smith is known for his incredible underwater photographs. Who could forget his image of two blue dragons, which won the Animal Behaviour category of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition in 2016 or his winning image of two bluebottles from the 2015 competition.

Matty has quite a knack for framing common marine animals in a spectacular light, allowing you to see it from a different perspective. For example, his blue bottle image was taken early in the morning to capture the striking contrast between its bold blue and the orange sun rising in the background.

His latest project is the small bay squid – you may know it as calamari – found along Australia’s east coast. The photographs, which capture the squid’s skin rippling with colour, make it difficult to enjoy your usual fish and chips with a side of calamari.
