The colour! These late 19th-century illustrations of the corals of the Great Barrier Reef are mesmerising.

IN 1884, naturalist  William Saville-Kent travelled to Queensland from London determined to capture the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.

From the photographs Sackville-Kent captured, artists Riddle and Couchman created beautifully coloured lithographs for Sackville-Kent’s book The Great Barrier Reef of Australia (1893), which he hoped would promote the unique Australian icon.
