Exhibition curator of Portraits of War, Louise Tegart, says the collection is unusual in that they are staged photographs of soldiers before they went to war. “Most Australian WWI images are either by official war photographers such as Frank Hurley or snapshots taken by soldiers,” says Louise. “These were taken as both an official record but also for families to order and treasure. They are small, personal photographs that may be the only photographs of some men.”
