This week’s reader photo of a lowlands copperhead was captured by Ben Stubbs.

“I found this very muddy lowlands copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) in bushland near Kynton, Victoria,” says Ben.

“The snake had clearly recently moved through a large amount of mud so had mud over his entire body – including both eyes. Consequently the snake was very defensive, and as you can see here it’s  showing the brilliant flattening of the neck that they do when threatened. I loved this shot, looks like a cobra which I love due to their close genetic relationship.”
