AG Reader Photo of the Week: monitoring the situation

This week’s reader photo of a yellow spotted monitor (Varanus panoptes) from mid-west Western Australia, was captured by Sophie Cross.
“Photographing this monitor was a real delight, even if it took a lot of patience, as it was exceptionally wary and spooked easily on seeing human movement,” says Sophie. “Typically after being spooked it would disappear down its burrow (under this concrete slab) for 10-15 minutes, before re-emerging. From there it was a patient waiting game of usually 20 minutes just with its head poked out, to anywhere up to an hour for being fully out the burrow.”
