An olive backed sunbird poses for the camera

David captured this image of an Olive backed sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis) posing on a holly mangrove in the Daintree River, North Queensland.

These striking birds are small honeyeater-like birds with a distinctive down-curved bill. This one is a male – which you can tell by the iridescent dark-bluish or dark-violet gorget (patch of colour near the throat) as well as his yellow moustachial stripe. They feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young.
