A double-eyed fig parrot takes a second look at the photographer.
This week’s AG Reader Photo was taken by Mark Christiansen in Cairns, Queensland, who captured this double-eyed fig parrot (Cyclopsitta diophthalma) eyeing the camera mid-snack.
In spite of its name, the double-eyed fig parrot doesn’t just eat figs, but also forages for berries, seeds, nectar, and the grubs of wood-boring insects.
They are also named for the cheek patches of some subspecies that vaguely resemble eyes, and are predominantly green with a short tail, a disproportionately large head and bill, and red and blue facial markings.
