The crested tern often swallows its food mid-air, after diving to depths of up to 1m to capture it.

This week’s reader photo of a crested tern (Thalasseus bergii) was taken by Gary Meredith from Hilton, Western Australia.

“This particular morning I arrived at Woodman Point in Perth, WA before the sun was up to make the most of the beautiful morning light,” said Gary.

“I was watching and taking photos of crested terns coming and going from the ocean to the beach. This bird had caught a pilchard and done a lap showing off its catch to the rest of the terns on the beach when it came straight at me – the light caught it just at the right time.”
