Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) are the world’s rarest seal species, only found on the shores of our lucky country – about 30% of the population in Western Australia and 70% in South Australia.

This week’s reader photo was taken by Malcolm Lang from Port Lincoln, South Australia:

“I recently purchased my first 100-400mm telephoto lens and was very excited to try it out on our local wildlife,” says Malcolm.

“The opportunity to snap the Australian sea lion came when trying to photograph sea birds while cruising through the deep waters surrounding Donington Island off the coast of Lincoln National Park.

“Shooting handheld, I raised my camera’s ISO setting to increase my shutter speed to counter the movement of the boat.”

Malcolm is a semi-retired, self-taught amateur photographer from Port Lincoln and a lifetime subscriber to Australian Geographic since the very first edition!
