“One hit, then after 2 minutes the second one hit.”

Darwin was shaken by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake around 1pm today. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded the earthquake in the Banda Sea, off the coast of Indonesia, at a depth of 200km below the Earth’s surface.

A local resident confirmed: “One hit, then after 2 minutes the second one hit.”

Despite no evacuation siren, workers in the city centre left their buildings for the safety of the streets.

Belinda Clough, a registered nurse at Danila Dilba Health Service in Darwin, confirmed that when “the ground started shaking severely beneath me, (she) jumped up and realised it must be an earthquake”.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology there is no threat of a tsunami. There have been no reports of injuries either.
