Australian Geographic has been shortlisted for a magazine cover award in the national Maggie awards.

THE MAGGIES ARE AUSTRALIA’S national magazine cover awards, and Australian Geographic is up for a gong.

Last year, AG took out the award for best cover in the Science, Technology and Nature category with our issue 107 cover of a Fraser Island dingo.

This year two of our covers have made the shortlist.

The dramatic cover of AG 111 (Nov/Dec 2012) shows a great white shark breaking the surface of still water (left). The photograph was taken by Mike Parry, following a spate of fatal attacks in Western Australia between 2011 and 2012. The issue’s cover story investigated the possible causes for the increase in fatalities.

Our second contender, issue 112 (Jan/Feb 2013) bears an image of a palm cockatoo taken by New York photographer Andrew Zuckerman as part of an extraordinary international project (below). The unusual angle of the bird and the incredible level of detail almost makes it look like an illustration.

We’re proud of these two covers. Which is your favourite?
