Eyre Peninsula, South Australia
AN OFT-OVERLOOKED part of South Oz that is chock-a-block with adventure weekend options is the Eyre Peninsula. From whale watching and diving with seals, through to the adrenalin overdose of cage diving with great white sharks, this part of the country has every marine-based adventure you can think of.
For 4WD camping and touring, you have the choice of following the dramatic coastline of the Great Australian Bight, or you can head slightly north from the coast and explore the well kept secret that is Gawler Ranges NP. This park offers visitors a small taste of the outback just inland from the coast and is usually quiet during the winter months, making it the ideal camping weekend away.
If you’re a keen angler, then the coastline off the peninsula should keep you well occupied over a weekend with fishing charters readily available.
For us at Australian Geographic Adventure, it is hard to go past the excitement of seeing one of the oceanic world’s apex predators – the great white shark – in its natural environment, albeit from the safety of a sturdy steel cage. These majestic fish have no fear of humans, enabling some (uncomfortably) close encounters for those keen to give it a try.
It is this mix of the wild southern ocean and its inhabitants, the outback camping and the long, white-sand beaches (some of which offer brilliant surf breaks during the year) that makes the Eyre Peninsula an easy choice as our second South Australia weekend destination.
