Once among Australia’s richest gold-mining centres, Tennant Creek has a dappled past, but the spirit of the locals is luring newcomers once again.

THE TOWN OF Tennant Creek, the story goes, was founded when a beer truck broke down in NT and a bunch of people set up camp around it.

Whether true or not, this anecdote nicely sums up the myth and mystery around this isolated township, 500km north of Alice Springs.

Once among Australia’s richest gold-mining sites, Tennant Creek’s last major mine has been closed for around a decade. However, a thriving and spirited community is seeing the town population start to swell again.

A thriving Indigenous arts centre and a genuine outback way of life are among the calling cards of this town with a heart of gold.
