“I wanted to show a side of bubbles that hardly anyone has seen before: their intricate detail, their uniquely stunning patterns and the way that their colors show as they freeze. Bubbles are ever moving, colors swirling as the soap moves across the surface,” says Angela.

When a frozen bubble breaks, it still holds the rest of its delicate shape.

“Like a snowflake, each bubble that froze possessed its own unique pattern and each pattern was beautiful,” says Angela. “Some resembled butterflies while others resembled broken eggs.”

This bubble frozen slowly so that its form solidified while it was still deflating.

In below freezing temperatures, the swirling begins to slow and then stop altogether as the bubble begins to freeze.

“When the sunlight hit them just right they looked like a sea of delicate paper lanterns, floating across the camera lens,” Angela says.

An unusual weather pattern called a Polar Vortex sent much of the US into a deep freeze, and with temperatures reaching almost -50 with wind chill, the conditions were perfect for freezing bubbles.

In the frigid temperatures of the Arctic freeze engulfing much of the US, photographer Angela Kelly captured a whimsical side to the cold.

Temperatures across the north of the US plummeted at times to -30C, which froze almost anything liquid very quickly. “Having often wondered if bubbles could freeze and if they did what they would look like, on a very cold winter’s morning before dawn, I grabbed my camera, bubble soap and my young son to find out,” says Angela.

During the Arctic freeze that descended on the northeast of America, photographer Angela Kelly took the opportunity to experiment with bubbles to see if they would freeze. The results are stunning. “Bubbles are such whimsical things! Everyone knows what they are; we have all seen them, played with them, and enjoyed them, but rarely in this form,” she says.
