PODCAST: An Evening on Everest with Greg Mortimer
ON 25 FEBRUARY 2016, Australian Geographic‘s founding editor, Howard Whelan sat down for an intimate conversation with one of Australia’s most accomplished mountaineers, Greg Mortimer.
Greg was one of the first Australians, with Tim Macartney-Snape, to summit Mt Everest, which he did in 1984, without supplementary oxygen. In 1990, Greg also made the first Australian ascent of Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, with Greg Child.
In this inspiring conversation, Greg recounts some of his biggest adventures, including a few harrowing near-misses and many funny moments. Hear about his childhood growing up in Sydney and exploring the Blue Mountains from a young age, and Greg’s thoughts on the future of adventure.
An Evening On Everest was the first of 21 Trailblazers Talks taking place at the Australian Museum in Sydney in 2016, held weekly in parallel with the Trailblazers exhibition, celebrating Australia’s 50 greatest explorers.
