Ian Kiernan AO and Kim McKay AO of Clean Up have accepted the 2013 Lifetime of Conservation award.

FROM A SIMPLE DESIRE to keep their local environment clean, the Clean Up team kicked off a major national movement.

In 1989, Ian Kiernan had the idea to ask the community to come together and tidy up Sydney Harbour. With the help of Clean Up co-founder Kim McKay and others, more than 40,000 people collected rubbish on Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day.

A year later, almost 300,000 people turned up for the first Clean Up Australia Day. In 1993 the team organised a similar campaign, but this time on a global scale. Clean Up the World attracted 30 million volunteers in 80 countries.

Today, the team continues to offer support and education to community groups.
