A lemon bellied flycatcher poses for his portrait in Fogg Dam, Northern Territory.

Congratulations to this week’s AG Flickr group member Geoff, for this AG Reader Photo of the Week: ‘Yellow-bellied Flycatcher’.

Geoff Whalan is a 70-year-old enthusiastic amateur photographer, who took up serious wildlife photography in 2010 with his first DSLR – a Canon 7D and 100-400 lens.

“I work full time for the Northern Territory Treasury,  but still manage to occupy another 20 – 25 hours per week travelling, photographing, editing and publishing, travelling up to 700km on some weekends on wildlife photography journeys,” says Geoff.

This image of a lemon-bellied flycatcher (Microeca flavigaster) was taken in the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve – a wetland area approximately 70km east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The dam came about from failed rice growing experiments in the 1950s and 60s, and is filled by wet season overflow fed from the Adelaide River.

“Most of my photography is done at Fogg Dam – it’s one of Australia’s better-known wildlife sanctuaries – but on up to three evenings a week you can find me photographing one of Darwin’s famous sunsets!”
