Congratulations to this week’s AG Flickr group member Simon Phelps for his image ‘Flatback turtle hatchling’.

Says Simon, a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and a landscape and wildlife photographer based in Port Hedland, WA:

“This image was taken along Port Hedland’s Cemetery Beach in Western Australia.

My daughter and I had gone down to the local beach to watch the female flatback turtles (Natator depressus) coming up to lay their eggs. Despite all the mining activity here, the mature females return each year, to the beach where they were born, to lay their eggs in the sand dunes.

While one was digging her nest, she uncovered some young turtles that had just hatched and were making their way to the surface. We followed the progress of the hatchlings down to the waterline and I managed to capture a few shots of them with my camera.”
