Kathmandu basecamp Retreat 50

A rained-out summer sojourn gives this three-woman tent a run for its money.

What's the one good thing about rain on a summer camping trip?

It's a good trial run for your equipment.

The Retreat 50 was put to the ultimate test during two days' heavy rain over New Year. The result? Three campers and their possessions remained dry, thanks to weather stops on vents and a PU coating on the fly sheet.

Surprisingly homely comforts helped combat the dreary days: "bedside tables" in the form of mesh storage pockets on either wall; "the patio" - a generous, fully sealable vestibule to guard muddy gumboots from wet weather; dual-access (“back door and front door”); and a few "one-way mirrors", interior view windows for privacy (and spying on neighbours).

The PE floor and detachable vestibule base kept our bedding dry as the rain pooled, and flexible fibreglass poles made the damp dismantle quick and painless.

The verdict? Worth the purchase price, to find a camping cloud's silver lining.
