Watch nature in action as a carpet python hauls a possum all the way up a tree and into the canopy.

FOOTAGE CAPTURED by Queensland man Greg Hosking shows the brutal moment "Monty" the python, as the snake is known, progressively tugs his dead possum prey up a tree.

The footage was shot in the backyard of Greg's Currumbin home on the Gold Coast last Monday while he was doing tending to his yard.

According to Greg, Monty is a regular in his backyard, but up until Monday he hadn't seen him for weeks.

"I looked up and saw it right up in the top of a tree, you could see the red fur of the possum in the python's mouth," he told ABC News. "I told my 9-year-old son what was going on and before we knew it he (the python) made his way down to lower branches.

"We could almost touch him, we were keeping our distance a little bit. He was maybe just 5 metres off he ground. It was pretty exciting to watch. It's mesmerising in an alarming kind of way," he added.

Back in October last year, a similar scene was captured by Brisbane dad Peter McMaster. However, that particular python had a little more trouble tugging its prey up the tree.
