Art meets science in a new award ceremony for Earth Science week.

On Monday, to begin the international Earth Science Week (11-17th Oct) Australian high-school students of all ages participated in this years ‘Geo-logies’ by submitting short films based on the theme ‘Earth science in everyday life’.

The event was hosted by Geoscience Australia along with the Australian Science Teachers Association. Coordinator of the Geo-logies and Australia’s Earth Science Week, Frances Haire, says that, “The geo-‘logies’ are great fun – it’s one of my favourite times of year”.

The winning senior entrant Paul Kipriotis from Tully State High School in Queensland explained how, with a few chuckles, features such as mountain ranges and oceans are formed, and how this in turn affects air and water currents, and hence our climate and nutrient circulation.

“The way that he combined humour with science knowledge and his ability to communicate to such a wide audience was brilliant,” says Frances. He certainly covers a lot in a short space of time. Congratulations, Paul!

You can check out the other Primary and Junior winners at this website.

Geoscience Australia’s Open Day was on the 18th of October. Look out for the event next year!
