Women on top

Meet the mother-daughter team who received a gong at last year's AG Society awards.

Mountaineering duo Cheryl and Nikki Bart created history when they became the first mother-daughter team to reach the 8850 m summit of Mt Everest (AG 90) at 9.05 a.m. (AEST) on 24 May 2008, seven weeks after setting out from Base Camp.

Completing Everest also bagged the women the mantle of the first mother-daughter team to climb the world’s seven summits (the highest peak on each of the world’s seven continents): Mt Kosciuszko (2228 m), Australia; Vinson Massif (4897 m), Antarctica; Mt Aconcagua (6962 m), South America; Mt Kilimanjaro (5895 m), Africa; Mt McKinley-Denali (6195 m), North America; and Mt Elbrus (5642 m), Europe.

En route to the top of the world, Cheryl and Nikki battled bitterly cold temperatures and several delays including the Beijing Olympics’ torch relay, which reached the summit on 8 May.

“The seven summits goal was the ultimate physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual challenge for us,” Cheryl said.
