Flickr photo of the week: yawning

Some bizarre pelican behaviour was captured for this week's AG Flickr photo of the week.

This week's AG Flickr photo by contributor Darcy Moore is one of some curious pelican behaviour.

Says Darcy:
"Over the last couple of years I have been learning to use my Nikon D90 in Kiama, a gorgeous town on the South Coast of Nsw with plenty of opportunities for enthusiastic photographers to take shots of seascapes and bird life. I have watched this particular pelican several times, in recent months, as it presides above the ocean rock pool where my family swims regularly. I managed to get quite close last weekend when it then performed the most amazing 'yawn' for a few brief seconds. I have never observed a pelican do anything like this before.

I am really interested in the way people learn photography in the 21st century, with social media tools allowing photographers to connect with one other. The networks that exist on Flickr, Twitter and Facebook allow sharing and learning to happen so widely. I find this inspirational and encouraging. My role as a deputy principal at a high school has led me to write about learning to be a shooter and HDR photography in an effort to share how learning is social, collaborative and about sharing."

The photo was shot on a Nikon D90 at 1/60, f 5.6 with a 70-300mm f 4.5-5.6 Nikkor lens.

  • Was interested to see your shot of the yawning Pelican. I took a similar shot a few years ago at Swansea, like you i had not seen this behaviour before. I have just uploaded my photo to Flickr you might be interested to have a look. Report

  • Thanks Brian. I checked out your photo and it is the same kind of 'yawn'. Really would like to know what a pelican expert would call it? Report
