Driving
The best way into the Australian Alps is by car, the main gateway towns from NSW and the ACT are Canberra (285 km on the from Sydney), Jindabyne (175 km Canberra/455 km from Sydney), Khancoban (285 km/570 km) and Tumut (195 km/410 km). In Victoria, the gateways are Bairnsdale (280 km from Melbourne), Traralgon (160 km), Bright (320 km) and Mansfield (190 km).


Bus
Murrays runs regular Sydney–Canberra coach services and a Sydney–snow (Jindabyne/Thredbo) service during the winter. V/Line runs regular Melbourne–Mansfield coach and Melbourne–Bright/Mt Beauty train/coach services, a Melbourne–Bairnsdale train and a Melbourne–snow (Mt Buller) coach service during winter.


Car hire
Check major rental companies Avis (13 63 33), Budget (1300 366 848), Europcar (1300 13 13 90), Hertz (13 30 39), Thrifty (13 61 39) for their nearest regional offices.


Flying
The Alps are close to Melbourne and Canberra and the major airlines (Qantas 13 13 13 and Virgin Blue 13 67 89) have regular direct flights or connections to both from all state capitals and many regional centres. Both major airlines also service Albury, as does Regional Express (13 17 13). Brindabella Airlines (1300 66 88 24) has regular Newcastle–Canberra and Canberra–Albury flights. Tiger Airways offers flights between Melbourne–Canberra (03 9335 3033).


Where to stay
Accommodation ranges from luxury hotel to self-catering apartments and ski-club lodges. Visitor information centres can advise on local accommodation to suit your needs or budget.
