AG Flickr photo: Birdwood to Werrikimbee

A stark, bare tree is the subject of this week's Australian Geographic Flickr contributor shot.

THIS IMAGE OF A bare tree by contributor Brett Dolsen is this week's Australian Geographic Flickr shot.

Birdwood to Werrikimbee it is part of a series of images I have taken along the Oxley Highway between Wauchope and Walcha in New South Wales.," says Brett. "The road through Birdwood to Werrikimbee is free range cattle land, with rambling streams, creeks and old farm buildings dotted along the way.

I try to travel the Oxley Highway at least once a year, with every season bringing changes to the diverse landscapes and scenery. Each time there has been something new found, and at Ellenborough you will even see an old suspension bridge (built in 1932) that crosses the Hastings River to Kindee.

The highway basically follows the route that John Oxley took coming from inland to discover Port Macquarie nearly 200 years ago, and since then forestry, beef, dairy farming and even a bit of gold fever have been the major industries or employers.

The local indigenous communities the Biripi and the Bunyah also would have travelled this route for hunting and trade - Oxley's journal refer to at least one encounter somewhere above the Mount Seaview area.

The Oxley Highway and the surrounding National Parks have been a great inspiration for my photography and for another passion of mine history. I now photograph most local events and only hope that my images will be there for others to see in another two hundred years."
