The 12 recipients of the 2008 Australian Geographic Society Awards include conservation pioneers, a mother and daughter mountaineering team and two sets of young men who’ve completed world-first adventures.

AG Society chair Sorrel Wilby was on hand to present the awards at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on Thursday 9 October.

“It’s been a very busy year,” said Australian Geographic editorial director Dee Nolan. “The Society has spent more than $150,000 supporting some 80 projects covering scientific research, community projects and adventure.”

One of the world’s most accomplished solo cavers, Sydney-based Alan Warild was presented with the Lifetime of Adventure award for his 40-year dedication to speleology.

Lifetime of Conservation winners Valerie and Ron Taylor were recognised for their 50 years of underwater conservation work, including their groundbreaking research into shark behaviour.

“Although adventurers draw more attention, we regard our support of research as one of the Society’s most important functions,” Dee said.

Spirit of Adventure awardee Esther Nunn was clearly more comfortable leading three camels 3000 km through Australia’s western deserts than public speaking, offering a heartfelt “thanks” on receiving her award, while fellow Spirit of Adventure recipients Chris Bray and Clark Carter thanked the Society for inspiring adventurers to continue to seek new and varied pursuits.
